This collection consists of fragments of many literary collections which were part of the YIVO Archives in Vilna before 1941 and of materials which originated in Jewish institutions of higher learning in the Soviet Union, notably in the Institut Far Yidisher Proletarisher Kultur (Institute for Jewish Proletarian Culture) in Kiev.  A portion of these materials was collected by Zalman Reisen, the Yiddish linguist, literary historian and author of the *Leksikon fun der yidisher literatur, prese un filologie* (Lexicon of Yiddish Literature, Press and Philology), 4 Volumes, Vilna, 1926-29. The materials pertain to the fifth volume of the Lexicon which was intended as a supplement to the first four volumes but which was never published.  Other materials come mainly from personal papers accessioned by the YIVO in Vilna.      Materials on Yiddish writers: individuals files on about 600 writers from Eastern Europe consisting of autobiographical notes and letters, biographies, bibliographies, manuscripts and typewritten copies, newspaper clippings, commemorative materials, announcements about lectures.  There are extensive files on S. An-Ski, Shalom Asch, Nathan Birnbaum, Ber Borochov, David Edelstadt, Simon Horontchik, Khaykel Lunski, Mendele Moykher Sforim, I.L. Peretz, Eliezer Schindler, Zemach Shabad, Sholem Aleichem, Morris Winchevsky, Israel Zinberg.      Papers of Nahum Shtif (1879-1933), Yiddish linguist, author, educator, literary historian, initiator and co-founder of the YIVO Institute in Vilna, chairman of the linguistics section of the Institute for Jewish Proletarian Culture in Kiev (from 1926).  The papers, which cover the period 1926-1933, relate to his activities in Kiev and include:  manuscripts of his linguistic, literary and political works;  drafts of plans for publications, institutions and educational facilities;  correspondence.      Materials on Yiddish language and literature from the Institute for Jewish Proletarian Culture in Kiev and from other Soviet Jewish institutions.  Manuscripts of Ukrainian-Yiddish and Russian-Yiddish dictionaries. Works in the field of Yiddish by Solomon Asher Birnbaum, Isaac Zaretski, Elias Falkovich. Minutes of meetings, project plans of various sections of the Kiev Institute.  Articles and essays on cultural policy with regard to Yiddish in the Soviet Union.
