Art and Artifacts Collection

Brief Description: The collection consists of original art works, reproductions, and historical artifacts.  Included are woodcuts, engravings, linoleum cuts, etchings, silkscreens, lithographs, drawings, paintings, watercolors and mixed media.      In addition to fine art works, there are also functional art works, such as theater drawings, costume and stage designs; political cartoons; and Jewish ceremonial art such as *mizrahs*, *ketubot*, Torah curtain designs, *megilot*.      Themes include: landscapes and shtetl scenes in Eastern Europe; Jewish holidays; Jewish types; portraits of individuals; Lower East Side; Holocaust; Yiddish theater. A number of works were produced by Jewish artists incarcerated in ghettos and concentration camps during the Holocaust. There is also art produced by children in displaced persons camps.      Artists include: Max (Moyshe) Band, Stanislaw Bender, Benn, Henryk Berlewi, Joseph Budko, Yosl Cutler, Yonia Fain, J. Foshko, Isaac Friedlander, Todros Geller, Enrico Glicenstein, William Gropper, Chaim Gross, Moses (Moyshe) Leib Halpern, Hirschfang, Ephraim Kaganowski, Mane Katz, Arthur Kolnik, Isaac Ilitch Levitan, E.M. Lilien, Abraham Manievitch, Zuni Maud, Abbo Ostrowsky, Abel Pann, Saul Raskin, Diego Rivera, Emanuel Romano, Herman Struck, Marek Szwarc, Yehuda Jennings Tofel, Abraham Walkowitz, Alfred Wolmark, Shloyme Yudovin.      Artists of the Holocaust period include:  Aussenberg (Terezin), Alfred Kantor (Auschwitz-Birkenau), Kate Munzer (Paris), Bak (Lodz Ghetto), V.E. Bloch (Shanghai Ghetto), Arnold Dagani (Transnistria), Fritta Bedrich (Friedrich Taussig (Terezin), Leo Haas (Terezin), Louis Heller (Lodz Ghetto).
