Historian, author, educator.  Member, YIVO Board of Directors, Chairman of the YIVO Research and Planning Commission, YIVO Chief Archivist. Born in 1905 in Kutno, Poland into a prominent rabbinical family. Studied history at the University of Warsaw under Meir Balaban. Published several monographs on the history of Jewish communities in Warsaw, Lublin, Plock, Kutno. After World War II became associated with the Jewish Historical Commission in Poland, devoting himself from this time on to research on the Holocaust period. Came to the U.S. in early 1950s and began his long association with the YIVO Institute.  Trunk's list of publications is headed by Judenrat: the Jewish Councils in Eastern Europe Under Nazi Occupation, which won him the National Book Award in 1972. He also wrote Lodzher geto: a historishe un sotsyologishe shtudye (Ghetto Lodz: A Historical and Sociological Study, 1962) and Jewish Responses to Nazi Persecution: Collective and Individual Behavior in Extremis (1970).
