Yiddish dramatist and novelist.  Hirschbein's plays, such as *Grine felder* (Green Fields), became classics of the Yiddish theater and were translated into English, German and Hebrew.  In 1908, while in Russia, Hirschbein organized a drama group in Odessa, which although short-lived, played an important role in the early development of Yiddish theater. The group produced plays by Shalom Asch, David Pinsky, Jacob Gordin and Sholem Aleichem.  In the 1920s, Hirschbein travelled around the world for several years together with his wife Esther Shumiatcher-Hirschbein, and subsequently wrote many travelogues in Yiddish which were published and widely read.  Throughout his literary career, Hirschbein regularly contributed articles, novels, stories to *The Day* (*Der tog*) in New York.  Born in Kleszczele, Poland.  In 1930 settled in New York.  He died in Los Angeles.
