Born in Odessa. Studied with Taneyev, Ippolitov, Ivanov and Leschetizky. Toured as a pianist. Active in the Society for Jewish Folk Music. Settled in Palestine in 1923, and helped to establish the Jewish National Conservatory in Jerusalem. Settled in New York in 1928, and was active in several Jewish musical institutions. Composer of Hechalutz (1928), the first opera with a Hebrew libretto, and other large-scale compositions on Jewish themes. Died in 1956.
