Born in Fastov, in the vicinity of Kiev, on September 13, 1887. As an adolescent, went to Vienna, where he became acquainted with active members of the Jewish Labor Bund. Immigrated to the United States in 1907. Between 1907 and 1924, became a staff member of the Forverts. Edited a Yiddish trade-union newspaper and a weekly supplement to the Russian-language daily, Novy mir. While working at this newspaper, met two regular contributors, Bukharin and Trotsky. Authored book, Lenin, in Yiddish, in 1928, which was one of the first books on Lenin to appear. The English version, Lenin: A Biography, was published in 1948. Among his other works are: Heroes and Martyrs, a two-volume study in Yiddish (1938); Politicheskie deyateli Rossii 1850-1920 (1969); Fun di amolike yorn (From the Bygone Years) (1970). Was affiliated with Radio Liberty and contributed to the Russian Review and Novy zhurnal. Died on May 27, 1973 in Miami Beach, Florida.
