Elias Tcherikower was a founding member of YIVO in Vilna, a member of its Executive Committee and Chairman of the Historical Section, 1925-1940. Attending to YIVO affairs from his residences in Berlin (1929-1933) and Paris (1933-1940), he kept in his possession all correspondence and other materials generated in his official capacity.
