The collection is arranged in alphabetical order by name of country and within each country primarily by name of town or city. Most countries have only inventories, but a few, indicated in the Finding Aids section below, also have subject indexes.

Poland before World  War II: Inventory, in numerical order by catalog number, manuscript, English. Poland during World War II: card inventory. Poland after World War II: card inventory.                                                                 The bulk of the Polish collection and most of Russia I, part of the Lithuanian, Estonian, Latvian,  Czechoslovakian and Hungarian photographs are cataloged on YIVO'S videodisc database, titled, "People of a Thousand Towns". The videodisc photographs are also cataloged on DISCCTLG, a Q&A database. DISCCTLG provides access by photo catalog number while "People of a Thousand Towns" does not provide such access.                                                                                    Russia II has a card catalog by name of family. There is no access to Russia II by place name.                                                                     A large portion of holocaust photographs are cataloged on HPIXCAT, a computerized Q&A database. A hard copy printout of an Index to Holocaust Photographs was produced from HPIXCAT, 3 volumes, English, 274 pp.
