This subject collection has been formed to house fragmentary records of Jewish benevolent societies and federations known under the name of *landsmanshaftn*. The individual *landsmanshaftn* lacked sufficient documents to constitute record groups in their own right. These mutual aid societies were established by immigrants usually, but not exclusively, from the same villages, towns and cities in Eastern Europe.
