Scientist, philanthropist. Received his doctoral degree in natural sciences in 1884. Was a student of E. Metchnikoff. Joined the staff of the Pasteur Institute in 1889. In 1892 and 1893, he discovered vaccines against cholera and the bubonic plague. From 1893-1895 and from 1896-1915, he lived in India where he established laboratories and carried out mass inoculation programs. In 1915 he moved to Paris. Thereafter, Haffkine became active in Jewish affairs including minorities rights in Eastern Europe, agricultural settlements in Palestine and colonization in the USSR. He established a foundation to aid yeshivot, called the Haffkine Foundation, and wrote in defense of traditional Judaism.
