Born Avrum Leib Fuchs into a Yiddish theatrical family in Warsaw in 1911 or 1913. Started performing at the age of 5 in Polish and in Yiddish. Came to New York in 1935. Performed serious roles with Maurice Schwartz, but became prominent in musical comedies. Made several Yiddish films including *I Want to be a Mother* and *The American Shadkn*. Toured widely. Starting in the 1960's, also performed in English-langugage films, plays, and television. Wrote much of his own material. Died in Los Angeles in 1994
