Simon Weber was born on May 4, 1911 in Staszow, Poland, where he learned in a traditional heder and Polish elementary school.  As a youth, he became involved in the Workers' Movement and was persecuted by the Polish authorities.  As a result, he was forced to flee Poland in 1928 and immigrate to Argentina.  In 1929, he immigrated to the United States, settling at first in Detroit.  There, he studied Yiddish literature and English, and taught in a Yiddish school.  Weber debuted with his short stories in the Morgn frayhayt, New York in 1932, where he was employed until 1939.  He was also an employee of Di Idishe velt, Philadelphia, where he published stories, articles, reports, and for a period of time, was also a news reporter.  From 1939, he was a regular employee of the Forverts, New York, and from 1949, a news reporter for this same newspaper.  In 1970, he became the Forverts' chief editor.  Weber also translated English language literature into Yiddish.  This included Upton Sinclair's No Pasaran, which appeared in installments in the Morgn frayhayt.  In 1966, Weber was appointed to the New York City Youth Board in the administration of Mayor John V. Lindsay.  He edited the short stories of I. B. Singer, and was sent to Stockholm with the writer when he won the Nobel Prize in 1978.  Weber died on December 1, 1987 in New York.
